What is keratin and how it helps your HAIR!

Tips and how to pro long your keratin treatment in your hair

A keratin treatment repairs and smooths your hair and helps control curly hair, making it smooth, shiny, and manageable. Our Keratin smoothing treatment can give you smooth, luscious-looking locks that are low on maintenance but high on manageability.

Keratin will noticeably improve hair health and provide long-term conditioning, protection and lustrous shine. Keratin Treatments last up to 3 months depending on hair type and maintenance

What’s the process?

The process involves getting your hair washed, then having a stylist brush the treatment onto wet hair where it will sit for about 30 minutes.

Some hair stylists prefer to blow dry the hair first and apply the treatment to dry hair. They’ll then flat iron the hair in small sections to seal in the treatment.

On virgin hair, results will improve with each application. You may have to repeat the treatment after 4 weeks, but each application will last longer. It adds intense glossy shine to hair and can reduce frizz. The whole process can take several hours — so bring a book or something quiet to do!

Potential benefits of keratin treatment?

The body naturally makes the protein keratin — it’s what hair and nails are made up of.

The keratin in these treatments may be derived from wool, feathers, or horns. Certain shampoos and conditioners contain keratin, but you’ll typically get the greatest benefits from a salon treatment done by a professional.

Benefits of getting a professional keratin treatment or doing one at home can include:

Smooth, shiny hair

Keratin smooths cells that overlap to form hair strands, which means more manageable hair and less frizz. This makes for hair that dries with little frizz and has a glossy, healthy look to it.

Keratin can also reduce the look of split ends by temporarily bonding the hair back together.

More manageable hair

Keratin treatments make hair more manageable, especially if your hair is particularly frizzy or thick.

If you constantly heat style your hair, you’ll notice that with a keratin treatment your hair dries more quickly. Some people estimate that keratin cuts their drying time by more than half.

Your hair may also become healthier and stronger since you can air dry it more often, saving it from heat damage.

Muk Spa Argan Oil Repair Mask 250ml

Fanola Botugen Reconstructive Mask 300ml

Hair growth

Keratin can strengthen and fortify hair so it doesn’t easily break off. This can make hair seem to grow faster because the ends aren’t breaking off.

How to prolong my keratin treatment?

As long as you care for a keratin treatment by not washing your hair too frequently (2 to 3 times a week is enough), then your keratin treatment can last up to 6 months.

Avoid washing, brushing or tying up your hair for the first 24-48 hours to allow the keratin treatment enough time to settle and absorb into your hair.

Using any products that do not contain parabens and or sulphates will help prolong your keratin treatment between visits.

Do you suffer from common hair problems such as excess oils or damaged hair? If so, you may find that your hair doesn’t last long between washes or doesn’t look as nice. So, are you wondering how to freshen hair without washing it? Here are a few tips and tricks to make your hair feel and look refreshed.

But first, we need to understand your hair concern to know how to fix it.

How often should you wash your hair?

We’re sorry to say but this answer varies between everyone. There isn’t a one size fits all response with this one. It comes down to your hair type and routine as to what’s needed. In an ideal world, you’d only wash it on average twice a week. Studies suggest though that if you are using a professional shampoo, you should not have a negative impact on the frequency that you wash your hair.

Most of the time it comes down to personal preference and individual needs. Sometimes age, gender and location will play a role in the frequency in which you wash. The most important thing to understand is if there is an underlying hair concern that needs to be addressed.

What is your hair concern?

Many people report different issues that can make their hair look less fresh. One of the most common reasons is due to oily roots. This is when there is an overproduction of sebum on the scalp and it creates an excess of oil. In some cases, it can make peoples hair look wet and greasy after washing it. Sometimes the oils are just on the root and the ends are often dead.

Other issues reported are the flaking of the scalp also known as dandruff. Often it will be irritating and lead you to scratch, causing visible flakes in the hair and sometimes will produce oils as a result.

The other issue is dry and damaged hair. This is frequently accompanied by frizz (unfortunately). As a result, clients will sometimes use hair appliances to help smooth over the frizz that gets produced. If your frequently curl, bleach, colour or straighten, this is probably your biggest concern daily.

Once you’ve identified your concern, you need to learn how to treat it so help last longer between washes!

How to freshen hair by washing

Confused that we are suggesting washing it? That’s probably because you’ve been using the wrong products. What shampoo and conditioner do you use? Where do you buy it from and what ingredients are included in it? Many people often turn a blind eye to what they are buying because they aren’t sure of the confusing names within the products. Brands bought from supermarket shelves will often have increased amounts of silicones and parabens which can lead to an increase in you needing to wash your hair.

Think back to the hair issues above and identify your needs. Now go find a professional brand to target those needs and see the difference. Have issues with frizz and need hydration? Go for a reputable brand like Pure Brazilian. Need specialised blonde shampoos? Use No Yellow. Have excess oils? Use Eleven Australia Deep Clean Shampoo or PieTrust us, you’ll feel amazing. All you’ll need next is the general maintenance!

Freshen your look with styling products

Okay, so there are a few things that you can try to get a few extra days between washes. Let us just start with the obvious and that’s dry shampoo. Not only will this reduce oils in the hair, but it also offers volume and body qualities that give lift! Here’s a secret, we also use this when styling hair for formals. Honestly, there are so many amazing brands to pick from our top 3 dry shampoos are By Moroccanoil, Eleven and Paul Mitchell.

If you’re not the type to use a product, simply brushing your hair can sometimes be enough. It helps to spread the oils from the roots of your hair down to the ends and helps to repair the hair naturally. While this isn’t going to be a miracle transformation, it’s good practice to brush daily. If you must use a hot styling brush, ensure you use a thermal protectant to be safe. Ceramic paddle brushes are our go-to in the salon!

Dry and damaged locks? Shine sprays, oils and moisturising creams work wonders for the hair. Just remember to only apply to the mid-lengths and ends to avoid an oily scalp. Don’t trade one problem for another! Leave-in conditioners and masks could also be beneficial too!

What causes oily hair?

One of the common causes for oily hair is the overproduction of sebum which is found on the skin. Overactive sebaceous glands are to blame and are one of the most common reasons why a person will experience oily hair. Other reasons can be the overuse of treatments such as hydrating masks and using them incorrectly. How are you applying your conditioner? Do you apply directly to your roots or just the mid-lengths and ends?

The best practice is to apply a small amount of conditioner into your hand and brush it through like a comb with your fingers. This will help to remove knots, clean and hydrate the hair without coming into direct contact with your scalp. Stress and diet can also play a role in the production of oils too. When you’re stressed, your body can sometimes produce excess Cortisol hormone throughout the sebaceous glands, making it overproduce. Relax, eat well and monitor your hair to really get it under control.

Ways to manage oily hair

How often do you find that you are washing your hair a week? Some people produce so much oil that they need to wash their hair multiple times every day! If this is you, stop now. Seriously though, this can be hindering, not helping you.

Some people report having an oily scalp but dry ends. This is very common, especially for those who colour their hair!

Find the best oily hair treatment for you

There are so many products on the market for people who suffer from greasy hair. It can be a difficult choice to know what will be best for you and it may involve some trial and error or seeking help from a professional. We always advocate that you speak with your hairdresser first. Who knows your hair better, right? Different salons will recommend products based on their experiences or what they currently stock. Ask the important questions you want to know before committing to the purchase.

Although oily hair is your main concern, we want you to think about what else is important too. Are you someone who colours frequently? If so, what colour hair? You may need a specialised colour shampoo and conditioner to ensure that whatever you use to strip the oils doesn’t also compromise your colour too. For blondes we recommend the No Yellow Formula by Fanola (vegan) to keep those ends hydrated while preserving the colour and reducing oil.

You may be environmentally conscientious and want something that’s going to be eco-friendly and cruelty-free. The majority of the brands we stock aren’t tested on animals and take the best considerations possible to ensure that they are helping to protect the environment. We love Eleven Deep Clean Shampoo & Conditioner for this reason. They are PETA approved and offer amazing results!

Another great idea is to consider products with activated charcoal. This is an ingredient that is being used more widely now to help remove excess oils. Our top pick is the 18in1 detox range because they are Aussie-made, contain no parabens and sulphate, and are gluten-free and cruelty-free too. Oh, it also smells incredible and gives you a little bit of an invigorating tingle that you’ll love too!

Top tips when washing your hair

While having the right product is one of the biggest steps to take to reduce oil, there are still other things you can do. Other management tips for your hair care routine are arguably just as important:

  1. Wash your hair less – excess washing can lead to a chemical change in the skin and lead to an overproduction of sebum!
  2. Shampoo twice, condition once. The first time helps to remove the oils and the second time will help allow for a deep cleanse.
  3. Apply shampoo directly on the dry scalp first. Some chemists and medical professionals advocate applying directly to dry hair. Oil and water separate when mixed together so it may be impacting your results (try the milk, water, food colouring and oil test to see what we mean).
  4. Only apply conditioner to your mid-lengths and ends. Applying on roots will almost immediately make the hair look and feel greasy.
  5. Thoroughly wash out the product from your hair. There’s nothing worse than missed product and making patches of your hair look visibly oily!
  6. Stick to a healthy diet. Fatty acids and vitamins are scientifically proven to be good for balancing the chemicals in your hair. They can add shine and promote strength. Dairy and refined sugars on the other hand can be making your life harder, so consider reducing them!
  7. Get plenty of rest and try to reduce stress. Stress = cortisol hormone which leads to the overproduction of sebum!
  8. Dry shampoo – Hide the oil and try to last longer between washing. This is how to get away with it visually!
  9. Brush your hair to distribute oils

What is Olaplex:

Okay, so we’ve all googled this question at some point, in fact, it’s probably how you were lead here in the first place. Olaplex is a specialised brand that was created to help restore and repair damaged hair bonds that are often damaged through the colouring, bleaching and styling process.

It’s primarily done in a step process, often carried out by professionals. Most salons will use it during a bleaching service to reduce the damage and stress caused to the hair. Because of the price of Olaplex, it will be considered an add on service. There is a lot of science behind the brand and there are many good reasons why it’s number one. In addition to the special bond treatments, there are takehome shampoos and conditioners too, that require much less professional knowledge.

Who Founded Olaplex?

The Olaplex brand is new in comparison to a lot of other hair care brands on the market. They started back in 2014 in a California garage. Dean Christal worked closely with Dr Craid Hawker and Dr Eric Pressly to develop the brand that it is today. Using bis-aminopropyl diglycol, it now knows of being one of the most revolutionary products on the market today. In fact, Olaplex sold shares in 2019 worth 16 billion dollars!

In fact, Olaplex has become so popular that even the Kim Kardashians swears by it! She said it’s the secret product she uses to be able to transform between colours so quickly without destroying her hair. Remember how she went from raven to nearly white blonde overnight? Yep, that’s all thanks to bond No.3! Wondering how? It’s complex and involves a scientific explanation.

The Science Behind Olaplex

Before we get into the specifics, it’s important to know that Olaplex is suited to all hair types. It’s used to help prevent and reduce the likelihood of the bonds of the hair breaking. When colouring, styling (with hot styling tools) or bleaching the hair, it is exposed to the possibility of the breaking of the bonds. These disulfide bonds help give the hair structure and are important to keep the hair’s integrity. Without being properly cared for, they then can break and leave you with hair beyond repair.

OLAPLEX is a patented single ingredient chemistry that links broken disulfide bonds in the hair during and after chemical services making them more durable than they were before. The end result is to leave your hair healthier, shiner and feeling better than ever before.

What Olaplex products are right for you?

There are a few different options when it comes to selecting Olaplex. You have the option to go all in and get the professional service carried out or stick to the at-home treatments. Those that bleach their hair more often may use all of the 9 steps in the process to ensure healthy hair.

There are 3 main objectives for each of the formulas. One is to treat the main, one is to maintain and the other is to protect. No.0 Intensive Bond Building treatment is proven to strengthen hair by 68% and repairs 3x as much when used in conjunction with the No.3 treatment (used by Kim K). The maintenance side of things is the at-home treatments that you can use to continue the strengthening qualities of the hair and aid with repairing shampoos and conditioners.

Olaplex Salon Treatment:

The salon treatment is one aspect we recommend you leave to a hairdresser, While it is possible to follow without professional knowledge, you won’t receive the best results. It’s normally completed through the colouring process and if not done correctly, may not be effectively protecting your hair.

While it may seem tempting to try it at home (we’ve all considered it), you’re best to leave it to the professionals. In saying this, if you do want to try it on your own, use guides from Olaplex directly.

Take home packs:

Using the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner at home helps to ensure that your hair has the best chance at repairing itself after overuse. If you’re some who likes to use hot styling tools daily, then we’re looking at you. Even if your hair is virgin and you use these products, your hair will have improved shine, reduced frizz and is easier to manage.

The verdict:

There is a reason we use this brand in our salon over others and it is because it works. We’ve tried the cheaper variants, read and recorded reviews and we always come back to Olaplex. While it is one of the most costly options on the market, it’s proven to work and will keep your hairs integrity.
